Sanitation company addresses sewage issue
Deep ditch on road explained as cause of sewage spill mishap on Wells Avenue in Parkwood.
A sanitation and hygiene solutions company has set the record straight after enquiries about a sewage spill mishap reached them.
A resident enquired on social media (Facebook) about whether it was common practice for Sanitech to empty raw sewage from their portable loos onto city streets. The incident had occurred opposite a grocery store on Wells Avenue in Parkwood on June 18.
Managing director Robert Erasmus explained that the trailer unit with the Sanitech branding was on hire to a contractor working in the area. “The vehicle and employee in the image are not from Sanitech but belong to the contractor. They use their vehicle to tow the trailer to where they work during the day and return it to their site camp which is opposite the grocery store in Parkwood in the evenings. We have spoken to the contractor and informed them of the incident,” he said.
Marthinus Eloff, operations manager for construction and events at Sanitech, added that there is quite a deep ditch that they go through to get to their site camp and that is where the trailer valve hooked and opened a bit.
“I did meet with Thembani Chauke (site foreman) on-site, and he is aware of this and told me that they did blow their hooter at the driver who then stopped and walked back to close the valve.”
