David Shapiro encourages people to have a routine to attain their goals

Chief global equity strategist commends the capitalistic system's ways of adapting to factors that affect the stock market.

Sasfin’s chief global equity strategist David Shapiro stressed the importance of monitoring companies during an In The Boardroom interview in Houghton.

Shapiro was interviewed by David Zidel on behalf of ORT SA for a candid talk and Q & A about the stock market and finances. The event was attended by local residents and people in the finance fraternity.

“When I help people invest, it means I invest their hard earned pension money which is one big responsibility,” said Shapiro.
“When you invest in a company there are a lot of things you have to consider, we monitor companies before you invest in them this includes what product are they making, is it sustainable, is it going to be around for a long time.

Shapiro added one always had to be aware about the future of the company invested in and stressed the importance of always being informed.

“You have to know and be aware of what is happening in the world and how that can shape your life or business. The most valuable lesson of my life was to always be prepared. I swore to never go into an examination, meeting or anything unprepared.

“Every day, I make sure I don’t have any meetings until 15:00 so that I am able to go through the markets and check what happened. By doing this each day I am learning something other people are not. Each day I am ahead of other people in terms of knowledge of the stocks which is important.”

The financial market advisor said the stock exchange had drastically changed from when he started out in the finance business.

“It was fun because it was like going through a boys club or boarding school, it was a male domain. The stock markets are dull today, I sit in front of the screen and I watch the screen turn red and green. There’s no dynamism and everyone is on guard.”
Shapiro added the stock market today was 200% more efficient than when he first started working in the markets.
