Money spent towards a warm cause
Partnership between The Chinese Association and the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton brings warmth.
The Chinese Association (TCA) partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation for a blanket drive to keep others warm.
The two have always partnered for various causes and through the foundation, based in Houghton, donations are given to the areas that need it the most.
The association, through The Chinese Association Women’s Federation (TCAWF), runs an annual blanket drive that supplies hand-knitted blankets to communities that are in need of warmth during winter.
“Due to the growing need of blankets during winter, the TCAWF realised that they needed to do more for the South African community, so we reached out to the South African Chinese community for more assistance and China Mall put up their hand in support,” said Erwin Pon, the chairman of TCA.
China Mall heeded the call with an outstanding gesture of giving back R100 000 worth of blankets. The owner of China Mall, Robin Xu, put his own money towards the cause with the help of some shop owners and donated 500 blankets in total.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Chinese community in Gauteng for their continued support and, in the words of Nelson Mandela, there can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return,” said Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
TCA prides itself on encouraging the Chinese community to get involved and support South African communities as a whole. The TCA and Xu believe that giving back to the community is a true reflection of gratitude and support.
China Mall raised a staggering R400 000 worth of food for employees and communities in surrounding areas during Covid-19. Xu mentioned that an act of kindness is never wasted. “As a collective, we can all make a difference in our communities. One step at a time we move closer to the goal of building a supportive structure to uplift those who are less fortunate,” concluded Pon.
