CineCentre Killarney screens comedian’s film

Riaad Moosa dreams of working abroad through his comedic work.

CineCentre Killarney screens comedian Riaad Moosa’s special ‘Comedian’s Cut’ new Material for the first time in Johannesburg.

The first Material film released in 2012 was about Cassim Kaif, a dutiful son who must hide his pursuit of stand-up comedy from his staunch father who expects him to inherit his store and uphold their Muslim beliefs.

In the second Material film screened on July 31, Cassim Kaif can be seen making tough decisions which affect his friends and family with the aim of becoming a successful stand-up comedian.

The film also stars Schalk Bezuidenhout, Joey Rasdien, Zakeeya Patel, Denise Newman and media personality Shashi Naidoo.

Author and film reviewer Fakir Hassen said he was impressed with the second sequel.

“The first Material movie was not bad, but I think what made it a fail for me was lack of human elements in terms of family and friends.”

Hassen encouraged people to go out and see the new version of the film. “I picked up that the comedian changed a few elements in the movie, and brought back certain values and the relationships that were lacking in the first.”

Moosa said although he was a qualified doctor, he knew he was an entertainer.

“I didn’t plan to be a comedian, both my parents are doctors and my dad said I could go into whatever career I required as long as I became an orthopedic surgeon first. I started my comedy career in a TV show, Pure Monate, many years ago until one opportunity led to the next, and I find myself in front of crowds today.”

The comedian explained that he was not a trained actor. “In terms of the dramatic scenes of the film, I did not have actor training for example, with the scene where I cried. I had to visit past emotional traumas to tap into that emotional side.”

Moosa said the movie would also be screened in Dubai but a cinematic release was not on the cards as yet due to him wanting to do a few tweaks to the film.
