Deansgate Retirement Village hosts age-old morning market

The Deansgate Retirement Village in Craighall Park invited people who run their own stores to set up shop at the morning market, which patrons could participate in.

There was a variety of products to choose from at the Deansgate Retirement Village Morning Market in Craighall Park. Residents attended the market on October 28. Admin and reception liaison at Deansgate Carol Williams said the market was annual and started in about 1984.

“It is fundraising, but generally we like to get our residents and their families involved. This year, we invited a couple of people who run their own stores to come and run their stores here today. We have Zinto Zinhle under the Rosebank Homeless Shelter, we have ladies selling jewellery, and our food court, among others.”

Williams said the gifts galore shop is run purely by their cottage residents. Some of them are 75 years plus and they set everything up for themselves. She said the general manager together with the board would make a decision regarding the money raised, which would be to the benefit of everyone at Deansgate.

Williams said they’ve got a range of people living there – from independent residents who can do things for themselves to those who are frail and need assistance. Two raffles for liquor and ray bands at the cost of R20 per ticket were played. Participants were expected to guess the Rugby World Cup result to stand a chance to win.
