Parktown High School for Girls learners, Keketso Smith shared a proud moment of becoming a published author.
“I had the privilege of becoming a published author when my work was included in the book Social Justice Stories: Journeys to Justice on December 9 at the University of Pretoria. I took part in the book competition run by the South African Schools Debating Board in partnership with the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender (CSAG) which aimed to share the youth’s views on the many issues in our society and propose measures we can take to solve them, in the form of poems, short stories or essays.”
Smith added that her piece on cancel culture was published alongside a variety of pieces which included climate change, racism, and gender-based violence.
The competition consisted of a nearly year-long editing process where she learned how to enhance her writing skills with the help of experienced authors and peer feedback.
“After long hours and endless deadlines, we eventually enjoyed the book launch on the Tuks campus, and each author received copies of the book including one for their school library. I am grateful to all the teachers, friends and family who supported me, and I would highly encourage people to read the book to gain insight into the numerous crucial conversations we need to have as a society and ultimately how we can journey to justice,” said Smith.
