Old Parks U7 cricket team had a special visit from a speedster of note.
Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi took time off to hold a coaching session with the youngsters.
Ngidi together with Kagiso Rabada, are the face of South Africa’s potent fast-bowling attack.
The young cricketers did some catching, running between wickets, and cut and pull shots, but the primary focus was on bowling. They got to work on the importance of bowling just outside off stump, and Ngidi worked with each mini group making sure to give a little bit of bowling advice to each child.
Coach Duncan Craggs said the cricketers hung onto every word of Ngidi’s, miles better than they do with him.
“Players gained a lot as there is always something a player playing at the top level and still at the prime of his game can offer, and the lads pay such close attention to every word that they do benefit and do take it in.”
“Ngidi is a great guy, was patient and listened to each kid’s question. You could see he was enjoying himself and this energy rubbed off on the boys who did try their best.”
At the end of training, Ngidi sat down with the boys and shared his story on how nervous he was on his debut for the Proteas in 2018 when he was only 20. This was against the number one Test side in the world, India, and he took seven wickets and was voted man of the match.
