Parktown High School for Girls launched their ‘Crochet Away’ project with the help of the 67 blankets volunteers on April 17.
67 Blankets ambassador, Phethego Mello said the launch was a success. “Every grade was involved because it is a fun way to acquire a skill and there was a huge turnout. Several people bought wool and crocheting hooks which showed their interest in the project. The 67 blankets volunteers also played a role in helping the different grades learn how to crochet.”
Phethego added that two vital factors in crocheting are the position of one’s hook and the position of how the wool was held, from there, it became easier to learn any stitch. She also recommended learning from YouTube.
Life Orientation teacher and head of the project, Vuyelwa Mtshazo explained, “The main point of the day was to encourage the learners to crochet and make squares and scarves. The project is a competition for house points and the house that will have more scarves or blankets will get points.”
Mtshazo concluded that it was an easier way to put the squares together and make blankets which would be given to those who were in need.
