Isabella’s rugby dream becomes a reality with the Springboks and Reach for a Dream

A single moment on the rugby field highlighted a young girl's journey through her toughest battle.

For Isabella Esterhuyse (10), meeting the Springboks was more than just a dream come true – it was a powerful moment of hope in her battle against soft tissue sarcoma. Through the incredible efforts of Reach For a Dream, Isabella was given an experience she’ll treasure forever.

“I was so excited and emotional when I found out I would be the mascot for the Springboks,” Isabella shared. “It was an honour to walk out onto the field with them. Standing next to Siya Kolisi while singing the national anthem was amazing.”

Isabella was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, and her wish to meet the Springboks was at the top of her list when referred to Reach For a Dream by Dr Rema Matthew. After receiving medical clearance, the organisation teamed up with sponsors like SA Rugby, Capital Hotel & Apartments, and Shamrock Pies to create a day Isabella would never forget.

Her favourite moments? “Walking out onto the field, holding Siya Kolisi’s hand, handing over the trophy, and when Cheslin Kolbe picked me up,” she said with a smile. “I felt so special like I was part of something big.”

Reach For a Dream has continued to fulfil the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses for 36 years, and went above and beyond to make Isabella’s day unforgettable. “They gave me the chance to forget about being sick and just have fun,” Isabella said.

As the Springboks celebrated their victory in Nelspruit, Isabella’s joy shone brightest. Her advice for other children going through tough times? “Never give up. Keep believing in your dreams, because they can come true.”

Isabella’s mother, Tara, expressed deep gratitude for Reach For a Dream’s love and support. “This day has meant everything to our family. The joy on Isabella’s face is something we’ll never forget.”

Through her ongoing battle, Isabella remains determined to one day return to the rugby field herself. With dreams of becoming a paediatric oncologist, she’s focused on helping others, just as Reach For a Dream helped her.
