Learner preserves St John’s legacy through his leadership role

St John's College learner's photography journey deepened his appreciation for the school's architecture.

St John’s College Grade 11 learner Kamogelo Thobejane aims to protect the college’s core traditions and values in 2025 through his leadership role as the ‘Custos’.
“The Custodian or Custos is a unique position partially exclusive to the college,” explained Kamogelo.
“It is my duty and privilege to ensure that the spirit of St John’s continues to thrive, preserving the unique character that has defined this institution for generations.”
Kamogelo added with the school being rooted in rich heritage and tradition, he was proud to uphold the essence of what made the educational institution distinctive.
The prefect’s duties include guiding and inspiring the student body by emphasising the traditions and values that have sustained St John’s College through the years.

“I seek to cultivate a sense of brotherhood and belonging, helping each learner understand their place within the larger narrative of our institution. Through this, I hope to ensure that the traditions that define us thrive for future generations.”

The Grade 11 learner noted that his admiration for the school was the driving force behind his passion to
lead. From the moment he set foot within its stone walls, he knew he had become part of a significant institution.

“St John’s is progressive and up to date but the values and principles that the school makes evident in each boy that passes through its walls are unchanging. Serving as the school photographer deepened my appreciation for our traditions and sparked an interest in the college’s unique architecture.”

The historical importance of the role of the Custos further inspired his commitment to upholding the values that make the institution distinctive.

Kamogelo’s goals as a Custos include making the history of St John’s College as accessible as possible, and bringing its legacy to life for current Johannians and Johannians to come.
