How a PV solar system can save you money and improve your home

Danie Esterhuizen, a master electrician from Dan Electrical, says as grid electricity prices increase over time, the savings from your solar system will grow.

Investing in a photovoltaic (PV) solar system for your home can lead to substantial long-term savings on your electricity bills while providing other key benefits.

These were the words of Danie Esterhuizen, a master electrician from Dan Electrical, with over a decade of experience in solar systems.

Esterhuizen says a typical PV solar setup includes solar panels, inverter, and batteries.

He says this system is designed to generate enough energy to meet your household’s needs, significantly reducing or even eliminating your dependence on the grid.

“Solar panels produce energy during daylight hours, typically between 10:00 and 15:00, with around four to five hours of peak production depending on the weather and season. During this time, the energy generated powers your home’s appliances, such as your geyser, washing machine, dishwasher, and pool pump. At the same time, the system stores excess energy in batteries for later use,” Esterhuizen said.

He added that once the sun sets and solar production decreases, the batteries take over, supplying power to keep your essential appliances running throughout the night. The cycle then repeats itself the next day.

By aligning your energy consumption with the solar power generated during the day, and maximising the use of stored battery power in the evening, you can significantly cut down on the amount of electricity you need from the grid.

“This means lower utility bills and long-term protection against rising energy costs. As grid electricity prices increase over time, the savings from your solar system will grow, making it an even more worthwhile investment. Additionally, there’s another important benefit to having a solar system. The inverter ensures a more stable supply of electricity to your home by regulating voltage and frequency, which helps protect sensitive electronics from power fluctuations,” he added.

This leads to a longer lifespan for your appliances, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.

Esterhuizen said that installing a PV solar system allows you to take control of your energy costs and benefit from consistent, reliable power.

Not only can it help you avoid the escalating costs of grid electricity, but it also provides peace of mind knowing your home is protected from the instability of the traditional power network.

“Over time, the financial savings and added reliability make solar a smart investment for any homeowner,” concluded Esterhuizen.
