A balancing act of sport, music, and academics
Ziyanda’s journey is a masterclass in balance. While most high school pupils struggle to juggle academics with a single extracurricular activity, she has seamlessly managed rowing, leadership, and her love for music. She describes music as her sanctuary, a space where she can unwind by playing her guitar or drums. “Music helps me cope with the stress of academics and rowing, especially in this past year,” she reflects.

Rowing, however, has been her primary focus, shaping her into the determined and disciplined individual she is today. Inspired by her sister, Ziyanda took up the sport in primary school, unaware of the transformative journey ahead. “Rowing has taught me hard work, patience, and resilience. These lessons have influenced every aspect of my life,” she shares.
Achievements on the water
Her rowing career has been nothing short of extraordinary. Representing South Africa at the Junior World U19 Championships in Canada was a career-defining moment. “It was incredible meeting athletes from other countries and competing on a world-class stage,” she recalls. This experience underscored the importance of resilience, especially as she balanced the rigorous training schedule with the demands of matric.
Her silver medal at the All Africa Beach Games further showcased her versatility. Transitioning to coastal rowing in Gauteng’s landlocked conditions required adaptability, but she rose to the challenge with the help of dedicated coaches. Missing the World Rowing Beach Sprint Final in Italy due to funding constraints was a setback, but she took it in her stride, shifting her focus back to academics with characteristic grace.

Academic excellence and leadership
Academically, Ziyanda’s results speak for themselves. With eight distinctions and a top 1% placement in history, she has consistently upheld the high standards she sets for herself. She attributes much of her success to time management and a supportive school environment.

Her leadership roles as head of communications and a house leader have allowed her to mentor younger learners, a responsibility she holds dear. “I hope I’ve made a difference to at least one girl,” she says humbly. Her participation in the African Leadership Academy’s Model African Union reinforced her belief in collaborative leadership and the potential of Africa’s youth.
Looking ahead
The quote: “Opportunity does not waste time on those who are unprepared,” encapsulates Ziyanda’s life philosophy. Her readiness to embrace challenges has paved the way for her next adventure: studying mechanical and mechatronic engineering at the University of Cape Town.
As she embarks on this exciting chapter, Ziyanda is optimistic and determined. “I love a good challenge and want to continue making my family proud while leaving a positive impact wherever I go,” she says.
