JSE Investment Challenge: A gateway to mastering the markets
The JSE is inviting South Africa’s future financial minds to step into the world of investing with the launch of its 2025 Investment Challenge.

The countdown to one of South Africa’s most dynamic financial literacy competitions has begun. Registrations for the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s (JSE) renowned Investment Challenge are officially open, inviting high schools and universities nationwide to engage in a thrilling stock market trading simulation. This isn’t just a game; it’s a crash course in mastering the art of investing.
The JSE Investment Challenge has equipped young South Africans with a deep understanding of financial markets for over half a century. Starting March 17, teams will compete in a virtual environment, managing R1m in-simulated funds to build their portfolios using real JSE-listed shares. With market conditions reflecting real-time fluctuations, participants get a taste of the high stakes and strategic decision-making that defines the world of investing.

But the stakes aren’t just virtual. Teams stand a chance to win monthly prizes, while the overall winners will walk away with a share of R1m in prizes – and for tertiary-level students, a coveted trip to an international stock exchange.
“Building the investors of tomorrow”
Ralph Speirs, the JSE’s senior CSI officer, believes the challenge goes far beyond competition. “Financial literacy is a cornerstone of personal and professional success,” he says. “Through this initiative, we’re fostering a culture of smart investing and preparing young people for the financial decisions they’ll face throughout their lives. By engaging with real-world scenarios, they gain insights that go far beyond the classroom.”
Last year’s challenge saw record-breaking participation, with over 49 000 young people taking part – a sharp rise from 2023’s 29 000 participants. The growth reflects a surging interest among South Africa’s youth in understanding and navigating the world of finance.

How it works
The challenge runs over six months, tracking the teams’ portfolio growth. High school teams comprise four learners from Grades 8 to 12, supervised by a teacher, while tertiary-level teams (with up to four students) must be registered at the same institution. With categories that test portfolio management, risk analysis, and strategy, this is no ordinary school project; it’s a real-world skillset in the making.
“The ability to manage risk and identify growth opportunities is invaluable,” adds Speirs. “Many past participants have turned their simulated success into real-world financial wins.”
