Seven years after Kwesta’s iconic music video Spirit, featuring Wale, became a cultural touchstone, the story of its characters is being reimagined for the silver screen. To mark this monumental milestone in South African storytelling, Tebza hosted an intimate round table conversation on January 23 at Usurpa in Riviera. Joining him were film and television heavyweights Kagiso Lediga, Karabo Lediga, and the legendary Motshabi Tyelele. Together, they shared their insights on the art of filmmaking, the evolution of South African cinema, and the challenges of carving out authentic narratives. The discussion also highlighted their journeys as University of Cape Town alumni, reinforcing how shared experiences have shaped their artistic paths.

Tebza, known for pushing boundaries across music videos, documentaries, and television, has ventured into uncharted territory with Spirit: The Movie, his first independent film. Drawing inspiration from Kwesta and Wale’s hit song and its visually striking music video, which he directed, the film promises to immerse audiences in themes of identity and self-discovery.
“Creating my first independent film was an act of self-liberation. A bold journey in storytelling without constraints,” Tebza shared. “I wanted to honour the characters in the Spirit music video, not just as symbols but as mirrors of the inner struggles we all face in defining ourselves. This independence allowed me to craft a narrative that explores who we are at our core.”
The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including industry icons Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha (Mabaso Family Reunion: The Funeral), Motshabi Tyelele (Justice Served), Rami Chuene (How To Ruin Christmas), and Kagiso Lediga (Mufasa: The Lion King). Tebza explained: “This film is my way of honouring the journey we all take to understand ourselves. It’s about breaking free from conventional storytelling and celebrating who we are, both individually and collectively.”

Spirit: The Movie builds on the visual and thematic power of the original music video, offering audiences an immersive experience that resonates far beyond South African borders. With themes of freedom and resilience at its core, the film aims to strike a universal chord while showcasing uniquely South African narratives.
As the film nears its anticipated release later this year, the buzz surrounding it is palpable. For fans of Kwesta, Wale, and Tebza’s visionary direction, Spirit: The Movie is more than just a film; it’s a celebration of what it means to own one’s truth and identity.
