Losing a job can be an overwhelming experience, but South Africa’s Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) offers a safety net for workers who’ve contributed to the fund. If you’ve recently found yourself unemployed, here’s everything you need to know about who can claim, how to apply, and what to expect during the process.

Who can claim UIF?
Workers who have contributed to UIF are entitled to claim if they’ve lost their job under certain circumstances. This includes individuals who were:
• Fired or dismissed,
• Contract workers whose employment has ended,
• Employed by a company that has gone bankrupt, and
• Domestic workers who lose their job, or if their employer passes away.
Who cannot claim?
Unfortunately, not everyone is eligible to receive UIF benefits. Workers who fall into the following categories will be disqualified:
• Those who resigned voluntarily,
• Workers suspended due to fraud,
• Individuals who fail to report on specified dates,
• Workers who refuse training or advice provided by UIF staff, and
• Those already receiving benefits from the Compensation Fund.
When can you claim UIF?
To qualify for UIF, you must apply within six months of your last day of employment. Make sure to register for UIF only after your contract has officially ended. The clock starts ticking from the last day of work until your benefits are depleted, or you return to employment.
How to apply for UIF benefits
Claiming UIF benefits is a straightforward process, if you follow the right steps and have the necessary documentation.
Step 1: Prepare your documents
• Before you visit your nearest labour centre, ensure you have the following documents:
• Your 13-digit barcoded ID or passport,
• Form UI-2.8 for banking details (signed by your bank with a stamped bank statement),
• Form UI-19, completed by your previous employer, showing your employment history,
• Proof of registration as a work-seeker, and
• Your last two payslips.

Step 2: Visit the labour centre

• Go to the nearest labour centre to submit your documents. Be prepared for a waiting period of two to six hours. Staff may also ask you to attend training or advice sessions, so, it’s important to comply with their requests to avoid delays in your claim.
• To find your nearest labour centre, visit www.labour.gov.za/contacts.
How will you be paid?
Once your claim is processed, you will receive a UIF checklist outlining when and where to sign for payment. It’s critical to adhere to the schedule for receiving your first payment.
• Step 1: Sign for payment. Appear on time at the designated venue with your UIF checklist and ID to sign for your first payment.
• Step 2: Collect Your UI-6A forms. You’ll be asked to sign the unemployment register and receive a UI-6A form, which is necessary for future signings. Keep this form in a safe place, as it will be required each time you claim.
• Step 3: Stay on track. Your UIF payments will be processed every four weeks. Keep track of your signing dates, which will be printed on your UI-6A forms. If your application isn’t processed by your first signing date, call the labour centre ahead of time to confirm the status.
How much will you be paid?
The amount you will receive from UIF depends on your previous salary:
• Earning less than R12 478/month: Expect 38-58% of your average monthly salary over the past four years.
• Earning more than R12 478/month: You will receive a fixed monthly amount between R4 250 and R4 550.
The length of your eligibility depends on the number of days you’ve contributed to UIF. For every six days worked, you are eligible to claim for one day. The maximum period you can claim benefits is 238 days.
