A major water leak at the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Hume Road in Dunkeld West has been left unattended for five days, despite being reported by Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams on March 22.

Williams raised concerns over Johannesburg Water’s (JW) ongoing delays in repairing leaks across the city. “The gushing water on Jan Smuts and Hume in Dunkeld West is not the only issue. There are several places in the ward, and I am aware of many instances across the city where JW is not able to meet its service level agreement (SLA) in terms of fixing water leaks. It’s terrible. The main point is that JW is not able to fix these leaks on time, and I think leaks, like the one on Jan Smuts and Hume, play a significant role in the so-called consumption of water in Johannesburg.”
Today (March 27), Williams escalated the issue again, sharing a video on X of the water still gushing from the pavement to highlight the urgency of the situation.

JW responded, stating: “The depot has dispatched a team to the site and is currently awaiting the tractor loader backhoe (TLB) to expose the pipe before proceeding with the necessary repairs.”
Residents remain frustrated as the leak continues to waste water, adding to the city’s ongoing supply challenges.
Residents are urged to continue reporting leaks to JW via their customer service channels, but whether these reports will translate into timely action remains to be seen.
