Pirates came out firing from the first whistle, controlling possession and dictating play. Their early dominance was rewarded with a comfortable 25–10 lead at halftime, leaving the Raiders with a mountain to climb. But rugby is a game of two halves, and the Raiders weren’t ready to roll over.
A fired-up Raiders squad stormed into the second half, turning the tide with a stunning comeback. With precision and power, they clawed their way back, eventually snatching the lead and putting Pirates on the ropes. However, just when it seemed like the visitors had stolen the momentum, Pirates dug deep. In a late rally filled with grit and determination, the home side found the finishing touch to secure a narrow victory in a match that could have gone either way.

Raiders head coach Harold Primo acknowledged his team’s sluggish start but praised their resilience. “We started slow, and that cost us a little bit. The first half ended 25–10, so it was important for us to score first in the second half. We fought back and even took the lead, but for some reason, we collapsed. We’ll take a close look at what went wrong and work on it.”

Pirates head coach Barred McKenzie credited his team’s determination. “It was a very tight game. We knew Raiders had a strong side this year and prepared for that. We started well, but the second half wasn’t as strong for us. Still, we stuck to our guns, showed character, and finished the job.”
The standout player of the match was Pirates’ Kahule Nethengwe, whose performance earned him the well-deserved Man of the Match honours.
With this thrilling opener setting the bar high, fans can expect an electrifying season ahead in the Pirates Grand Challenge. If this match was any indication, rugby lovers are in for a wild ride.
