Parktown Boys rugby prodigy crowned u16 best player of 2024 at Pirates Rugby Club
A young rugby talent from Parktown Boys has captured the spotlight at Pirates Rugby Club, earning recognition as the U16 Best Player of 2024.
Parktown Boys Grade 10 learner Lethabo Malahela has emerged as a shining star in rugby, claiming the coveted title of 2024 U16 Best Player Overall at Pirates Rugby Club.
At just 15 years old, Lathabo has demonstrated a maturity and talent beyond his years, solidifying his place as one of the country’s most promising young athletes.
Lethabo comes from a family where rugby isn’t just a game but a way of life. “Rugby is like blood. Every weekend, we’re either watching or attending games,” he shared. Although he has excelled in basketball and soccer, rugby is his main focus. His versatility as a scrumhalf, flyhalf, or fullback has been key to his success, but he has a special love for the scrumhalf position, where he feels most at home.

Playing against older and more experienced opponents in the U16 division has been both a challenge and a blessing for Lethabo. He credits these experiences with pushing him to new heights, saying, “Playing with older guys pushes me to train harder and play better. This award showed me that the work I’m putting in is paying off.” One of his most memorable moments this year was reaching the final rounds of the prestigious Grant Khomo Week, a feat that reinforced his potential as a future rugby star.
Balancing his academic responsibilities with his passion for rugby has been a test of discipline and resilience. Lethabo admits it hasn’t been easy but credits Parktown Boys for equipping him with the tools to succeed. “The school is full of challenges that push you to grow. The support I’ve received, from coaches, teammates, and even the obstacles I’ve faced, has made me better not just as a player, but as a person.”

He also acknowledges the pivotal roles of his father, and coach Aidynn Cupido, in shaping his journey. His father’s encouragement, though at times intense, serves as a driving force. “My dad dreams through me in a way, but it’s always from a place of encouragement.” Cupido’s guidance has been equally transformative, helping Lethabo refine his skills and adopt a growth mindset.
Inspired by players such as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Lethabo sees his journey as a reflection of what’s possible with hard work and determination. “Sacha’s maturity and ability to overcome challenges resonate with me. He shows that age is just a number.” For Lethabo, rugby is more than just a sport, it’s a teacher, instilling values of mental toughness and perseverance. “It’s about defending your try line, tackling bigger opponents, and never giving up. It’s a reflection of life’s challenges.”
Looking ahead, Lethabo has his sights set on making a provincial team, a goal that requires regrouping with his age group to maximise his chances. While his long-term dream is to represent South Africa as a Springbok, he remains focused on the present, working tirelessly to improve his game. As the U16 Best Player at Pirates Rugby Club, he has proven that greatness knows no age limit, and his journey is only just beginning.
