Earlier this month, media reports painted a bleak picture of the facility, citing food shortages, hot water outages, and crumbling infrastructure. However, Madisha clarified that while some disruptions did occur, they were either already resolved or in the process of being addressed. He explained that hot water is available throughout most of the hospital, with only two blocks currently affected due to corroded heating coils. These coils are specialised components that must be custom-manufactured, with a turnaround time of four to six weeks. A contractor is already on site, and one of the replacements is expected to be completed early this week. In the interim, wards are managing by sourcing hot water from nearby clinics and using boiled kettle water.

Madisha also confirmed that compliance issues between the hospital’s supplier and the local municipality caused a delay in food supply in mid-March. He emphasised that the issue was not financial and has since been resolved, with the hospital now receiving regular food deliveries. Claims that the facility faced shortages due to unpaid debts were firmly denied, with Madisha stating that the recent challenges had no connection to financial mismanagement.

As winter approaches, the hospital is focusing on ensuring patients remain warm and comfortable. While there have been no problems at the laundry facility and clean linen remains in steady supply, staff are prioritising the washing of blankets in anticipation of colder weather. According to Madisha, infrastructure remains an area of ongoing attention, but there are no current shortages impacting patient care.

Throughout the disruptions, hospital staff remained committed to maintaining standards. Madisha confirmed that all necessary support was provided to staff during the affected period to ensure that patients continued to receive consistent and safe care. He reassured the public that patient welfare remains the hospital’s top priority, even amid logistical and technical challenges.

Although some structural concerns persist, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital has moved swiftly to restore stability and is confident that its systems will continue to support both patients and staff in the months ahead.
