Dress for Dreams helps turn girls’ matric dance dreams into reality
A local teen, Georgina Grota, is turning ball gowns into a beacon of hope, with a heartfelt initiative that gives underprivileged girls the chance to shine at their matric dances, without the price tag.
In a world where fashion often represents exclusivity and extravagance, one Johannesburg teenager is stitching together a movement that threads compassion with couture. Meet Georgina Grota, a matric learner at St Mary’s School, Waverley, who is proving that a beautiful dress can do far more than turn heads; it can transform lives.
It all began with a wardrobe and a wish. “Personal style has always been my favourite form of self-expression,” Georgina says, reflecting on her early fashion flair. “At age three, I refused to wear any dress that didn’t twirl, and insisted on jumping into the sandpit in my party shoes.”

But her story isn’t just about frocks and frills. In 2023, Georgina, and a group of friends, launched an Instagram page, Jozi Dresses, allowing Johannesburg girls to rent each other’s custom formal wear. “I started to realise how lucky we were to have access to beautiful dresses, and it hit me – not everyone does.”
From that moment of realisation, Dress for Dreams was born, a non-profit initiative that provides free, pre-loved formal dresses, suits, and shoes to matric learners who cannot afford the often-exorbitant cost of a matric dance outfit.

“There’s so much poverty around us in Joburg,” Georgina says. “This was my chance to combine my love for fashion with something meaningful – helping other girls feel as confident as I did in my matric dance dress.”
The initiative has quickly blossomed into a citywide campaign of generosity. With donation bins stationed at hotspots like: The Johannesburg Country Club (Woodmead and Auckland Park), Rosebank and Rivonia Catholic Churches, and St Mary’s School, the community has rallied behind Georgina’s vision. Stylish Ridez even stepped in to brand the donation bins, which were kindly donated by Gofresh. Promotion through the CCJ Foundation’s newsletter has also added a welcome boost.
So far, Dress for Dreams has collected an astounding 274 dresses, with 106 girls signed up to attend the first of two fitting days hosted at St Mary’s. On these days, girls can browse the selection, try on dresses, and choose their perfect outfit, complete with shoes, at absolutely no cost.

But Georgina’s goals go far beyond fabric. “We want the girls to have a memorable experience – to feel beautiful, confident, and supported. If we can take away even a fraction of the financial pressure from their families, and allow them to truly celebrate their matric year, then we’ve succeeded.”
Balancing this initiative with the demands of matric has been no small feat. Georgina admits it’s been challenging, but worthwhile. “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes planning: Finding donation points, sorting dresses, spreading the word. It’s taken up a lot of time, but I’ve learnt so much about project management and community organising.”

Perhaps the most touching moments have come from the stories behind the clothes. “Seeing wedding dresses donated has been especially emotional,” Georgina shares. “It’s so moving to see people give up something so sentimental for the sake of helping someone else.”
As she prepares for university next year, Georgina hopes to pass the torch to another fashion-forward changemaker willing to take up the cause. “I’d be thrilled to offer my advice and experience to someone who wants to keep Dress for Dreams alive.”
For now, the initiative continues to grow – not just in donations, but in impact. She has turned a twirl-worthy dress into a symbol of dignity, confidence, and kindness.
