Local dad competes in Mr South Africa and advocates for orphans and vulnerable children

Khutso Mokoena from Melrose uses his platform to inspire youth, promote healing, and prove that purpose is more powerful than popularity.

In the heart of Melrose, a man quietly reshapes the narrative of modern masculinity.
Khutso Mokoena, a data analyst by day and a father full-time, is currently a contestant in the Mr South Africa 2025 competition, but that’s only a fraction of his story.

“I never thought I’d be here,” he admitted, reflecting on a journey that began with bare feet and borrowed dreams. “I used to walk to school carrying my books in a Checkers plastic bag.” Raised by his grandparents with structure, love, and tough discipline, Mokoena’s life was built on humble foundations – the kind that shaped his deep sense of responsibility and purpose.

Many first saw him on Married at First Sight Mzansi, where his calm, thoughtful nature stood out. But beyond the spotlight, he describes himself as a ‘handsome nerd’ who’s more likely to be found at Comic-Con than in clubs. He plays multiple instruments, loves Star Wars and Marvel, and proudly embraces his quiet nature. “TV showed a sliver of who I am. Off-screen, I’m just a man trying to grow, love and live honestly.”

Now in his early 30s, Mokoena is using his platform to advocate for orphaned and vulnerable children – a cause close to his heart. He once volunteered as a maths tutor at an orphanage in Soshanguve, and even after its closure, the memory of those children stayed with him. “I know what it’s like to have very little. But I also know the power of being seen.”

He is not driven by fame or likes. He’s motivated by authenticity, emotional growth, and what he calls ‘quiet leadership’ – showing up with consistency, integrity and intention. “The gym, fatherhood, my career, I approach them all the same way. You won’t always feel ready, but you show up anyway.”

Despite hardships, from losing a bursary at university to experiencing homelessness, he never stopped pushing forward. “I still sometimes feel like I’m catching up, but I look at how far I’ve come. My story didn’t start where others did.”

His message to young people, especially those feeling left behind? “You’re not behind. You’re just early in your story. Keep going.”

Mokoena doesn’t see Mr South Africa as a crown to wear, but a tool for impact. “Even if I don’t win, I’ll keep showing up. I want boys and girls from humble beginnings to know they’re allowed to dream.”

He hopes to inspire others with his story and is proud to represent his neighbourhood on the national stage. Supporters can follow his journey on Instagram @khutso_mokoena_sa.
