5 women successfully graduate from the Union for Jewish Women (UJW) sewing school
A few of the graduates from the Union for Jewish Women (UJW) sewing school plan to start their own businesses.
Jubilation and excitement filled the Oxford Schul on June 19 during the Union for Jewish Women (UJW) Johannesburg sewing graduation.
The sewing empowerment manager, Ariane Heneck, explained that the empowerment programme began in 2010. “The school was established to contribute towards improving South Africa’s most pressing problems and adding to skills development. Since then, the school has seen over 120 sewing graduates learn new skills.”

Some sewing graduates found employment in the industry, while some are using their skills to better their families.

Mapule Sesenyi, a sewing graduate, said her plans include starting her own business. “I will be working with other seamstresses in town, who offered me a space to rent while I create garments, which I will be selling.”
Another graduate, Myra Rosin, said she was elated about her graduation because her hard work paid off. “I hope to start a business with my sister, and teach her how to sew as well. Before coming here I had no clue what sewing entailed, my mother and grandmother inspired me because they were good at it.”
