The Johannesburg branch of the Union for Jewish Women is calling on people who are interested in honing their sewing skills to join their 2026 class

The sewing empowerment school aims to:
• Provide practical basic sewing skills for unemployed men and women.
• Teach students basic principles of sewing, including design and manufacturing.
• Equip students with the ability to earn an income from the work generated from selling items.

How to create a felt heart craft for Mother's Day
To create this adorable button heart, you will need a few items such as heart templates, red felt, assorted buttons, toy stuffing, and some basic sewing tools.

Unemployed men and women are carefully screened and selected to undergo four months of training within the parameters set by a structured curriculum.

Potential students are screened by a panel made up of the Union of Jewish Women and the teacher of the school.

Approval of students is based on the following factors:
• Motivation,
• Aged between 18–60,
• Availability to attend full-time classes for four months, and
• Ability to organise own food and transport to Killarney.

The school operates Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 16:30. There will be a R400 registration fee and graduates will receive a certificate at the end of the programme.
