St John’s College collects more than 8 000 cans of food for Mandela Day

The St John's College community engagement spearheaded the food can drive.

67 minutes for Mandela Day not only united St John’s College with its community, but it’s a day where over 8 000 cans of food were collected for donation.

Executive headmaster, Stuart West, said he was proud of the learners for making the donations possible.

“It was a difficult task for the college due to ongoing exams, so it was difficult to fit in the 67 hours.”

West added that the school wanted to find another way that they could contribute to their precinct, and with food always being a demand, they thought canned food would go a long way.

Head of community engagement committee, Atli Chipu, explained that the idea for the cans began with the committee discussing what difference it could make for Mandela Day.

“That’s when the numbers started coming and saying, okay, maybe we should do like a 1 000 cans, but then we thought we could attempt 6 700 cans.”

Chipu added that with help from parents and staff, they reached their goal.
