Rosebank Mall’s general manager Muhammed Varachia said the launch was not only a ‘switch-on’ event; it was a signal of how they were rethinking energy in the commercial space. “What we have activated at Rosebank Mall is what we believe to be the largest hybrid system in the retail sector. It features a 7.2MW power battery, a 4.5MW invertor, and a dual fuel generator.”
Varachia added that the hybrid was seamlessly managed by smart controls, which optimise everything in real time.

The general manager highlighted that their tenants could now trade through power disruptions without worry. “We can ease the strain on the national grid by cutting our demand during peak hours, a win not only for us but the wider city. None of this would have happened without collaboration, a bold vision, and a sizeable capital investment.”
Hyprop National utilities manager Jacques Vosloo explained that the new hybrid system is one of the largest of its kind in SA. “It promises to deliver not only financial returns and savings but provide our tenants with certainty that they will be able to trade uninterrupted. This is truly innovation in motion, and the blueprint of Hyprop and the communities we serve.”
UT Energy’s Wally Weber explained that the project represented a departure from the commercial energy solutions approach. “It was not built on the idea of going green, but on a sound financial investment strategy. We’ve been able to deliver a commercially competitive energy investment that sets the boundaries for the future of energy.”
