Houghton breathes a sigh of relief as M1 pipe burst is finally fixed

After weeks of disruption and traffic risks, JW confirms the Glenhove Road pipe repair has been completed.

The saga of the burst pipe on Glenhove Road in Houghton has finally come to an end. Johannesburg Water (JW) has confirmed that the critical repair was completed over the weekend, easing the strain on residents and motorists who had been affected for weeks.

The burst, which caused water to spill onto the M1 and posed a hazard to drivers, required a complex repair due to its location beneath the highway bridge. Because of its deteriorated condition, and the restricted space around the concrete bearing structure, specialised contractors were brought in to carry out the work.

JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said the contractor is now busy with backfilling the excavation, while tar reinstatement has been referred to the Johannesburg Roads Agency. She added that JW teams would continue monitoring the area to ensure road safety and stability.

For nearby communities in Houghton Estate, Melrose, and Rosebank, the news brings much-needed relief. The burst had disrupted supply and caused concern about the impact on the busy M1 corridor, which is now expected to return to normal.
