South Africa’s first streetball champions crowned at Red Bull Half Court finals
History was made at Wits University as MBB Blue Soldiers and Hoop Hustlers claimed victory, earning the right to fly the flag in Dubai in November.
Wits University buzzed with music, energy, and fierce determination on September 13 as the first-ever Red Bull Half Court National Finals unfolded, bringing together South Africa’s top men’s and women’s streetball teams after weeks of qualifiers in Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria.
In a high-octane display of 3×3 basketball, the MBB Blue Soldiers seized the men’s crown, while the Hoop Hustlers emerged as champions in the women’s division. Both teams now carry the hopes of South Africa as they prepare to test themselves against the world’s finest in Dubai this November.

For players like Khanyi Maphisa of Hoop Hustlers, the experience was more than just about winning.
“Being part of this has been overwhelming. We felt the pressure in the semi-finals, but trusted each other, and that final shot changed everything,” she said, reflecting on the moments that brought her team to triumph.
Red Bull’s unique twist to the 3×3 format, rewarding teams who Own The Court by scoring the most points overall, added another layer of intensity. Every basket mattered, every play counted, and every athlete left their heart on the court.
With the champions crowned, South Africa has announced itself as ready to compete on the global streetball stage. The country’s basketball community will be rallying behind its new pioneers, hungry to see them shine in Dubai.
