Fibre cable delays storm channel repair on Oxford and 11th roads in Rosebank
JRA awaits the fibre service provider to remove its cables from its storm water channel, before it can bring in a jetvac to clean it, and then reinstate.
A service provider’s fibre cables, located in Johannesburg Road’s Agency’s (JRA) storm water channel along Oxford and 11th roads in Rosebank, continue to delay the agency’s task of clearing its storm water channel.
The Gazette first reported about a blocked storm water drain, along Cotswold Road, back in February this year, but the JRA team found that the source of the blockage stemmed from the storm water channel, which has since been dug up for further investigations.

A reporter went onsite to meet with JRA personnel on September 19 to understand the storm water channel challenges better.
Repriment Segodi, acting assistant planning manager for Norwood Depot in Region E, explained that the storm water channel was connected to the storm water drain located on Oxford and Cotswold roads.
“Previously, the upper section, from Cotswold Road, was blocked, and investigations were conducted, which revealed that our storm water channel contained fibre cables and water and traffic signal pipes from service providers.
“The issue is that we have to get the service owners to remove their cables from our channel, to be able to bring a jetvac truck to clean and vacuum it, before we can reinstate the road.”

Segodi added that the main problem was the fibre cables, which ran parallel to the channel, blocking it.
Since the rainy season is approaching, this could lead to floods in other drains, which are connected to the main channel.

“We have engaged with the service providers of the fibre cables. They are in the process of obtaining a wayleave. We proposed that they obtain an emergency wayleave, which will enable the process of removing the cables.
“After they remove their cables, we will bring in a jetvac, and our team will reinstate what has to be reinstated.”
He concluded that JRA’s timeline for the job was dependent on the service provider removing its cables.
