Raw sewage worsens conditions at Pieter Roos Park

Already in a state of neglect, Pieter Roos Park, in Parktown, is now facing a fresh crisis as raw sewage flows through its grounds, leaving residents alarmed over health and environmental risks.

Pieter Roos Park, in Parktown, already under fire for its deteriorating state, is now facing a new crisis… Raw sewage running through its green spaces.

During a walkabout of the park, resident Nazime Randera pointed out streams of sewage flowing across the grass and collecting into dirty puddles. In some areas, the water has carved small channels through the soil, leaving behind a foul stench. The spill appears to be leaking from a damaged line, spreading into the open, mixing with litter and creating stagnant pools.

The park has long been a source of frustration for nearby communities, who complain about neglect, vandalism, and safety concerns. Now, the sewage leak is compounding the decline. “It’s heartbreaking to see the park like this,” Randera remarked during the walkabout. “Instead of being a safe place for families, it’s becoming dangerous and unhealthy.”

The sight is not only unpleasant; it’s dangerous. Streams of sewage have pooled into muddy puddles, adding to the already dire state of the park and highlighting the lack of maintenance.

Community members are calling for urgent action, demanding that Johannesburg Water identify the source of the leak, repair the damaged infrastructure, and clean up the affected areas before the problem worsens.
Johannesburg Water was contacted for comment. This story will be updated once an official response has been received.
