Ward 74 residents face ongoing water and sewage nightmares

Ward 74 residents continue to endure water disruptions, unsafe conditions, and a lack of sustainable solutions from JW.

Ward 74 councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku remains deeply concerned about several water and sewerage bursts in the ward. “For weeks, residents have endured repeated disruptions, unsafe conditions, and a lack of sustainable solutions from Johannesburg Water (JW). On Greenacres Drive in Birdhaven, residents have been without a consistent water supply for nearly three weeks, with no fewer than seven bursts reported.”

Kayser-Echeozonjoku added that each time JW responded, the repair was temporary, and within days another burst occurs.

Similarly, on Pine Road in Orchards, residents were forced to walk through raw sewage, due to a leak. An unacceptable violation of their dignity and basic human rights.

The councillor added that JW’s repeated failure to implement lasting solutions was an indictment on its ability to deliver essential services. “Residents should not have to suffer weekly water bursts and sewer leaks while being expected to continue paying for services that are not delivered effectively.”

The Gazette reached out to the JW team regarding the ongoing sewage challenges, and will update the story with their comment.
