Norwood CPF welcomes new station commander with renewed safety focus

The CPF welcomed new Station Commander Colonel Clive De Frates, with Chairperson Sunhil Geness pledging fresh collaboration to boost community safety.

The newly elected Norwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) officially held its induction on September 3, marking the occasion by welcoming the precinct’s new station commander, Colonel Clive de Freitas.

CPF chairperson, Sunhil Geness, expressed optimism about the partnership ahead, describing the appointment as an opportunity to forge stronger ties between residents, police and community structures. “Having already collaborated with the new station commander, I am fully assured that he brings a renewed spirit of collaboration, ethical leadership, and innovation to the Norwood community,” Geness said. “He embodies integrity, accountability, and a community-first mindset, supported by a proven track record in crime prevention and transparent policing.”

The CPF has already outlined its strategy to work closely with De Frates, focusing on open communication, joint crime meetings, and technology-driven approaches to strengthen public safety. Plans include workshops with residents, enhanced digital engagement, and coordinated action with SAPS and ward councillors across the Norwood precinct.

For Geness, immediate priorities remain clear: tackling crime hotspots, particularly burglary and contact crimes, while addressing deeper challenges such as abandoned buildings, illegal occupation, and street-level criminal activity. He also highlighted the importance of consistent community engagement, increased resources for resident-led initiatives, and stronger partnerships with other state bodies to improve crime intelligence.

The induction set the tone for what both the CPF and SAPS hope will be a new chapter in building trust and restoring confidence in policing. With a shared focus on collaboration, transparency and innovation, Norwood residents may soon feel the impact of leadership rooted in accountability and community-first values.
