Repairs finally begin on Blue Bridge in Craighall Park

After being closed due to erosion damage, the Blue Bridge over the Braamfontein Spruit is undergoing urgent repairs and is expected to reopen in two months.

The Blue Bridge in Craighall Park is finally seeing much-needed repairs after being closed to the public due to severe erosion along its eastern embankment. The pedestrian bridge, located next to Delta Café on Marlborough Avenue, has long been a favourite route for walkers, joggers and residents.

Contractors HLTC (Pty) Ltd have begun work to stabilise the bridge and make it safe for public use again. The R6m project, funded for the 2025/2026 financial year, is expected to take around two months to complete, although rain and river access challenges could cause delays.

The repair work will include installing new steel columns to support the deck, underpinning the eastern abutment, filling voids with concrete, and adding gabions for erosion protection along the riverbank. Temporary coffer dams have also been set up to allow workers to access the riverbed safely.

Despite the closure, two nearby footbridges remain open, allowing pedestrians to continue crossing the Braamfontein Spruit. Residents are encouraged to visit the site and watch the progress as the bridge slowly returns to full strength.

Once finished, the Blue Bridge will be a safer, stronger crossing for the many walkers, cyclists and families who use it every day, restoring a valued part of the Craighall Park community.
