City of Johannesburg approves urgent Delta Park Blue Bridge rehabilitation

Relief spreads through the community as the City of Johannesburg begins urgent repairs to Delta Park’s Blue Bridge, restoring a vital and much-loved pedestrian link.

The Blue Bridge in Delta Park, a familiar sight for walkers, cyclists, and families crossing the Braamfontein Spruit, is finally set to receive the urgent attention it desperately needs.
After months of anxiety and restricted access, the City of Johannesburg has confirmed that emergency rehabilitation work on the bridge will begin soon.

The once-sturdy pedestrian bridge, which connects communities and offers access to one of Johannesburg’s most loved green spaces, suffered major structural damage during heavy flooding on March 5. A second storm on March 26 left it even more fragile.

A subsequent independent assessment, facilitated by the Craigpark Residents Association (CRA), found the bridge to be at immediate risk of collapse, making it a serious public safety hazard.

Following ongoing engagement between residents, officials, and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), the city has approved an emergency repair plan expected to take around two months to complete, depending on the weather. A site office has already been identified, with final environmental approvals pending before work begins.

Samantha Herman, chairperson of the CRA, said the association welcomed the city’s swift action after months of concern. “The Craigpark Residents Association welcomes the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s decision to repair the Blue Bridge at Delta Park,” she said.

“This bridge is an important pedestrian link used daily by residents, schoolchildren, and park visitors, and we are relieved that work is finally being scheduled.”

Herman also paid tribute to the late councillor Martin Williams, whose persistent advocacy helped draw the city’s attention to the bridge’s deteriorating state. “We especially acknowledge councillor Williams, whose tireless efforts in liaising with city officials helped bring attention to the urgent need for this repair.”

While the CRA and residents have welcomed the news, Herman said there were still concerns about transparency and the long-term integrity of the repairs. The quoted cost of about R6m for a repair, rather than a full replacement, has raised questions among residents eager to see lasting results.

“We remain concerned about several aspects, particularly the quoted cost and the need for full transparency around how these funds are spent,” Herman said. “In addition, access into the park during construction poses new security challenges that must be properly managed.”

As Delta Park prepares for construction to begin, the CRA has emphasised the importance of restoring not only the bridge but also the surrounding environment. “Delta Park is one of Johannesburg’s most loved green spaces. We want to ensure that the natural environment and pathways are fully restored once construction is complete.”

The CRA has committed to working closely with the contractor and JRA to ensure the rehabilitation is done safely, efficiently, and to a standard worthy of the park’s significance.

For now, residents can take comfort in knowing that progress is finally underway, a step closer to reconnecting communities and restoring the heart of Delta Park.
