Houghton author celebrates double victory as true crime memoir earns major recognition

Goolam Suleman’s acclaimed book Frontline Legends: Memoirs of the Underworld secures two major awards, reaffirming South Africa’s enduring fascination with its hidden underworld history.

Houghton-based author Goolam Suleman Khan is celebrating a remarkable achievement with his true crime book, Frontline Legends: Memoirs of the Underworld. The gripping account of South Africa’s mobsters and gang warfare from the 1950s to the 1970s has won two accolades at the Multi-Marketing Book Awards, taking home Best Non-Fiction and the award for receiving the most votes across all categories.

Suleman describes the recognition as a surprise, reflecting the author’s characteristic humility. The book delves into the lives of notorious figures such as Sherief Khan, Solly Khan, and Dan ‘Ma-Gly’ September, revealing the clandestine world of organised crime and courtroom drama surrounding the infamous 17th Street Double Murder. Its authentic portrayal stems from extensive research, including South African law journals and detailed courtroom dossiers.
