Despite ongoing challenges, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital celebrates a year of remarkable achievements

2025 was a remarkable year for CMJAH, and 2026 will be bittersweet, with CEO Gladys Bogoshi bidding farewell to her 40-year health career.

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) celebrates a year of achievements, driven by the dedication, leadership, and professionalism of its management and staff.

CEO Gladys Bogoshi noted that despite ongoing challenges, CMJAH continued to deliver exceptional patient care, setting a benchmark for healthcare excellence in the country.

The hospital’s highlights included:

  • CMJAH’s outstanding performance during the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) inspection. The hospital achieved an excellent overall rating, including 100% on non-negotiable vitals, 89.29% on vitals, and 90.21% on essentials, the highest essentials score nationally.
  • The cardiology department successfully performed Gauteng’s first, and South Africa’s second, MitraClip implant procedure, while the paediatric haematology department achieved its first successful matched unrelated donor (MUD) transplant, providing lifesaving options for children without family donors.
  • The breast imaging unit was upgraded through a 7-year partnership with Cricket SA, and the breast clinic launched a screening programme for staff, fostering a proactive and healthy workplace.
  • CMJAH also proudly celebrated the Smile Foundation’s 25-year milestone, performing life-changing procedures for 14 children during Smile Week.
  • CMJAH staff demonstrated resilience in navigating operational challenges, including water shortages, disruptions to essential services, and medical gas shutdowns, ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality patient care.

Preparations are underway to host a special celebration in Bogoshi’s honor, who will retire on February 27, 2026. Her leadership, and 40 years of dedicated service in the public health sector, will be celebrated.
