4 arrested as police recover stolen Fortuner at Wanderers cricket match

Weeks of surveillance and a joint operation involving police, metro officers, and private security led to the arrest of a suspected vehicle theft syndicate that had been targeting cricket fans in Norwood and Bramley.

A co-ordinated police operation resulted in the arrest of four suspected members of a vehicle theft syndicate, and the recovery of a stolen Toyota Fortuner in Norwood.

The arrests, made on the afternoon of January 10, followed weeks of heightened crime-prevention efforts by Norwood SAPS, Bramley SAPS, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and private security companies, particularly during major cricket fixtures at the Wanderers Stadium.

According to Norwood SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, the suspects had been linked to a series of vehicle thefts involving Toyota Fortuners, Toyota Hiluxes, and Ford Rangers across the Norwood and Bramley precincts since December last year.

A joint operation, led by Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Molepo, was briefed on a suspicious vehicle believed to be carrying four men involved in the thefts. Police intensified patrols around the stadium and surrounding suburbs, where the suspects were known to operate during cricket matches.

“The same syndicate had been troubling us since December,” said Masotsha. “They previously managed to escape with a white Toyota Fortuner stolen along Grant Avenue on December 19, 2025, and had attempted to steal another Fortuner and a Toyota Quantum on January 8 during a cricket match.”

On Saturday, the suspects returned to the area, allegedly intent on carrying out another theft. They succeeded in stealing one Toyota Fortuner, but were intercepted while attempting to steal a second vehicle. Members of the joint operation moved in swiftly and arrested all four suspects.

During the arrest, police found the men in possession of car jammers, computer boxes, vehicle registration plates, and various other car-breaking tools. One of the registration numbers was later confirmed to be linked to a vehicle reported stolen at Springs SAPS in November 2025.

All four suspects, who are believed to be from Soweto, have been detained at Norwood SAPS. They are expected to face charges related to the possession of jamming devices and carjacking implements. The recovered Toyota Fortuner has been impounded at the Aeroton Vehicle Recovery Centre.

Masotsha said the police vehicle identification unit has launched a thorough investigation to determine where other stolen vehicles linked to the syndicate may have been taken.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to SAPS on 086 001 0111 or contact the Norwood SAPS Relief Commander on 071 675 6057.
