St Mary’s School, Waverley rising tennis star eyes international future after provincial success

From early mornings on the court to provincial colours and national ambitions, teen tennis player Taylor White is quietly building a game defined by discipline, consistency, and heart.

From the moment Taylor White first wrapped her fingers around a tennis racquet at the age of four, the sport became more than just a hobby.

Inspired by her father’s love for the game, she was quickly drawn into the rhythm of rallies, the challenge of competition, and the quiet focus tennis demands. Years later, that early spark has grown into a determined journey, marked by provincial representation and standout performances.

Now a learner at St Mary’s School, Waverley, Taylor credits the school’s high sporting standards for shaping her, both as a player and as a person.

“Tennis has taught me discipline.” She added that the school’s strong sense of community and support has played a vital role in her development. At St Mary’s, excellence is expected, and Taylor has embraced that expectation with maturity beyond her years.

One of her recent highlights came at the Joburg Summer Tennis Tournament, where she claimed gold in a hard-fought final. While the medal was rewarding, Taylor values the growth that came with the victory even more. Facing her schoolmate and close friend, Idara Usen, in the final added an extra layer of intensity.

“We know each other’s games so well. The points were long and structured, and that really helped me grow.”

Taylor’s steady rise has also seen her represent Gauteng Central at inter-provincial level, an achievement she describes as both exciting and affirming. Making the Gauteng Central team for three consecutive years remains her proudest accomplishment, a testament to her consistency in an environment where competition continues to intensify. “It shows that my level is improving every year.”

Despite tennis often being an individual sport, Taylor thrives on the camaraderie of team events, and the opportunity to meet players from different backgrounds. On the court, she relies on simple but effective mental strategies, resetting between points to stay calm and focused during tough moments.

Beyond trophies and selections, tennis has instilled lessons that extend far beyond the baseline. Focus, attentiveness, and resilience have become principles Taylor applies in all areas of her life.

Looking ahead, her immediate goal is to compete in an International Tennis Federation tournament, viewing every match as another step forward rather than just a result.

In the longer term, Taylor hopes her dedication will open doors to an overseas university scholarship, allowing her to continue balancing academics with high-level tennis. As she refines her game, she draws inspiration from professional star Carlos Alcaraz, admiring his composure and demeanour on the court.

Still grounded, still hungry, Taylor White is not rushing the journey. Instead, she is building it point by point, guided by passion, family support, and a belief that her best tennis is yet to come.
