Norwood SAPS seize ammunition in Orange Grove

SAPS officers stop a suspicious taxi on Louis Botha Avenue, uncovering 220 rounds of live ammunition and possibly preventing a deadly crime.

Norwood SAPS officers displayed exemplary quick thinking and keen observation skills, potentially saving the lives of many community members during a recent high-density policing operation in Orange Grove.

The operation took place on February 5, with Norwood SAPS officers collaborating with JMPD officials on Louis Botha Avenue as part of a visible policing stop-and-search initiative aimed at reducing crime and enhancing public safety.

Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha noted that the operation also provided an opportunity to recognise officers who consistently go above and beyond their duties. “Management at Norwood SAPS would like to commend our members who performed exceptionally well during this operation. Their dedication and alertness truly made a difference,” stated Masotsha.

During the operation, officers stopped a white Toyota Hilux taxi travelling from the MTN taxi rank to Alexandra. As part of standard procedure, they asked passengers to identify themselves and to step out of the vehicle with their luggage for inspection.

At this point, the officers noticed one passenger behaving suspiciously. “He was sweating heavily and visibly shaking,” explained Masotsha. “When asked if he was feeling unwell, he claimed he had a sweating problem but stated he was not on any medication.”

Despite his explanation, the officers remained cautious. Their concerns grew when they observed that he was carrying a particularly heavy black bag. When questioned about its contents, the passenger claimed it contained building materials.

“Due to the weight of the bag and his nervous behaviour, the officers decided to search it,” Masotsha said. “Inside, they discovered a large quantity of live ammunition.”

A total of 220 rounds of unlicensed ammunition were found in the suspect’s possession, and he was unable to provide any licence or documentation allowing him to possess or manufacture ammunition. The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with illegal possession of live ammunition. The case has since been handed over to Crime Intelligence, and further investigations are underway.

“There is a strong possibility that more arrests may follow as investigations continue,” Masotsha added. Police believe that the seizure may have prevented serious crimes and potential loss of life, highlighting the importance of visible policing and community cooperation.

Norwood SAPS has called on taxi associations, drivers, and commuters to assist in the fight against crime by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious behaviour.

“We urge taxi drivers and associations to work closely with us. If you notice any passengers carrying suspicious luggage or behaving strangely, please report it immediately.”

Members of the public can contact the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or reach the Norwood SAPS relief commanders at 071 675 6057.
