Adopting the new recycling culture at GHS

Greenside High School protects its school environment by recycling plastic bottles.

Noticing something unique during a vacation in Zanzibar, Paula Tedder, a geography teacher at Greenside High School, took a valuable recycling lesson back home.

Tedder said while on holiday, he noticed a wire structure in the form of a large fish designed to collect used plastic bottles for recycling.

“When I returned to school, I spoke with the principal, Craig Strauss, about acquiring a similar wire fish for learners to place their bottles in and help the environment,” he added.

After he was given the go-ahead, he approached Tess Bentley from Capricorn Shipping to sponsor the project. “She was delighted to assist and after some research, the fish project became a reality.”

He said to encourage learners to put plastic bottles in The Fish, the student governing body approved his idea of having a winner every month who gets to treat his or her friends to food from the tuck shop.

“Learners have to write their names on the outside of the plastic bottles and put them in The Fish to be able to win, and once a month we then have a draw where we pick the winner.”

Farhan Gaikwad, the January fish project winner, said at first he was shocked but thrilled to have the bottle with his name drawn.

“I was happy, and the fish project is awesome as it encourages us at Greenside to reduce the amount of plastic in the world,” added Farhan.

“So far, the fish project has been a huge success, with The Fish filling up fast and the plastic bottles being distributed to the trolley guys who work in our Greenside community,” Tedder concluded.
