Joburg Ballet appoints a new chief executive officer

On the first of September Joburg Ballet will be blessed by the presence of Elroy Fillis-Bell.

Elroy Fillis-Bell has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Joburg Ballet with effect from the beginning of September. Elroy will take over for Esther Nasser, who has been in the job since 2016.

Fillis-Bell is the current Senior Manager of Operations and Administration at the University of Pretoria’s Javett Art Centre. In this capacity, he led the new organisation through the challenging transition out of the Covid-19 pandemic, while also achieving a major rise in revenue growth.

He holds a BA Honours in Theatre Directing and Drama Education from the University of Cape Town. From 2009 to 2011, he was the musical director of Bridgetown Theatre Company, an arts development organisation on the Cape Flats. He has spent the last 13 years working for highly regarded organisations such as the Suidoosterfees Arts Festival in Cape Town and the Arena Stage at the Mead Centre for American Theatre in Washington, D.C.

He was the company manager for the award-winning Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre before joining the Dramatic, Artistic, and Literary Rights Organisation in 2016, where he oversaw the licensing section for visual arts, theatre, and literature for five years. He presently works on the board of Lawyers for the Arts South Africa, a small organisation dedicated to building and supporting legal representation for South African arts workers.

Fillis-Bell has spent the last 13 years working for highly regarded organisations such as the Suidoosterfees Arts Festival in Cape Town and the Arena Stage at the Mead Centre for American Theatre in Washington, D.C.
