Norwood police retrieve an unlicensed firearm in Orange Grove
One suspect was caught by the Norwood police with an unlicensed firearm in Orange Grove while the other two suspects fled the scene.
One suspect was arrested by the Norwood police for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Norwood police spokesperson Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha reported that on June 2, and about 22:00, the Norwood SAPS with private security and community patrollers conducted a high-density station commander operation in the Norwood precinct.
While conducting a stop and search on the corner of Sixth Street and Louis Botha Avenue in Orange Grove, Warrant Officer Masotsha and Sergeant Rodney Masoga saw three suspicious males standing against the wall of a nearby lodge. The police tactically approached them and identified themselves as police officers and asked to search them.
Masotsha said while they were busy searching, one other suspect refused to be searched and minimum force was used to search him then the other two suspects fled the scene. The suspect was searched and an unlicensed firearm was found at his waist, under his pants, hidden by his long grey jacket.
“Suspect was asked to produce a valid licence to possess Z88 pistol (firearm) whose serial number was filed off but failed to do so. Suspect was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and notice of his rights were explained to him. Exhibit was booked in our register as evidence.”
Masotsha said the arrest came as a major breakthrough as the place where the suspect was arrested is a major [hotspot] of robberies involving firearms. The Norwood police encouraged anyone who has been robbed at that mentioned address to come forward as it might be the same suspect who was terrorising the community along Louis Botha Avenue in Orange Grove. Norwood Police Station commander Colonel Logan Govender commended the two police for removing an unlicensed firearm from society.
