Norwood Young Stars needs a financial backer

Norwood Young Stars Football Club requires a financial donor to help out with affiliation, registration and membership fees and other monetary needs to participate in football events.

The Norwood Young Stars Football Club played two games in the Alexandra North Rand Local Football Association. On June 24, the team played against Polokwane Rovers and later lost 2 – 1. On June 25 the young stars played against Alex and won 3 – 2. Commenting on the game on June 24, Polokwane Rovers captain Simon Kubayi said he found the game to be balanced as his team dominated the first half, but Norwood Young Stars came back stronger and dominated the second half.

The Norwood Young Stars founder Venita Masisi expressed the challenges that the team is facing.

She thanked Bidvest Wits for dealing with three-quarters of these challenges as they give the team kits, equipment and more.

“However financially we don’t have a backer. We usually go to Eden Park, Soweto and other places to play matches and I usually have to take money out of my pocket. The other challenge is that playing in Alexandra is very tough because I’ve got all four divisions in Alexandra. I run the team with coaches and team managers who don’t get any pay but do this voluntarily,” Masisi explained.

She added that for them to go and play in tournaments; affiliation, registration and membership money are all paid from her pocket. Masisi said she is also trying to rebuild her girls’ team as well.

Having had the team since 2010, Masisi often participates in events to uplift the children. “Now I have taken the parents to sewing classes through a sewing school under the banner of Norwood Young Stars. It’s sewing to empower mothers to become self-sustained as a club. We don’t charge anything; we just teach women to come and sew. We’re hoping to get a lot of orders if sewing can work, then we could use the money. Bidvest is paying for the office and got the sewing machine for me,” Masisi said.

Access to a training field is also a challenge for the team. Norwood Young Stars train at a five-a-side section at Paterson Park in Norwood on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and have no field to train on for the remaining days. “Whenever we play on the big field at Paterson Park, we have to pay money.”
