Craighall residents are encouraged to report damaged or fallen street lights
City Power is busy with repairs for fallen street light poles on Jan Smuts Avenue
Local residents from Craighall and the surrounding areas are urged to be the ears and eyes of ward councillors by reporting faulty or broken street light poles.
Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams reported a broken and collapsed street light pole on 368 Jan Smuts Avenue to City Power.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said, “City Power Hursthill Service Delivery Centre is aware of a fallen streetlight along Jan Smuts. The pole was knocked off and subsequently damaged in a vehicle accident. The incident was reported to the SDC on August 20. ”
He added that, as per the Service Legal Agreement (SLA), residents should only escalate the incident after 7 days if no response or work was carried out.
City Power was still within seven days of attending to the logged call.
Mangena added that it was for that reason that the team was dispatched to the scene when they were made aware of the incident.
“We removed the fallen pole from the site and are currently working on plans to replace it. In addition, you would also appreciate that when a streetlight or pole is knocked down due to an accident, certain processes need to be followed by the law enforcement agency, such as the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) or the South African Police, following the accident to conduct investigations.”
The spokesperson noted that, for instance, the area would ordinarily be temporarily closed off for bystanders and people to utilise, due to the nature of the accident, more especially if it was a fatal accident.
The incident scene would be used to gather information to ascertain what happened and to share that information for insurance claims, opening a case, etc.
“The authorities that deal with accidents and accident reports will take over the scene until they hand it over once they have concluded their investigations. In essence, no work can be done until it is handed over,” concluded City Power’s spokesperson.
Residents are urged to log queries to the relevant entities so that they can step in and escalate the matter if necessary.
- Residents can log into the City Power portal and log the problem
- Alternatively, residents can call the City Power head office: 011 490 7000
After completing that process, as a resident you contact your ward councillor and follow these steps to escalate the matter:
- Name
- Cell
- Address (include suburb and nearest street corner or avenue)
- Reference number
- Date and time first logged
- The actual problem (keep it short)
- Send a photo
