Author launches book to assist parents in Bramley

The Profound Conference Centre in Bramley was filled with book lovers as they attended the book launch of Not Too Late: Bring Back Involved Parenting.

It’s Not Too Late: Bring Back Involved Parenting is the title of Victorine Mbong Shu’s new book. The author based in Bramley launched her new book on August 31 at the Profound Conference Centre in Bramley.

Breaking the ice was George Mutendadzamera who shared how he changed the way he interacted with his children after learning some life lessons. The founder and CEO of Vula Unlock Consulting said he had been spending too much time focusing on work without paying much attention to his children. One day he spent the day with them and realized he didn’t know them very well. “It’s important as parents to engage with our families. After my epiphany, I came up with a concept that, for the child you want to see, the work starts now. You have to be inputting values, attitudes, behaviours and attributes into them.”

2023 Mrs Grand South Africa Finalist, Jennifer Warren who is a mother of three said she realized she could not instil the same upbringing her mom instilled in her in her current children. “I stepped back and re-evaluated the whole family situation and asked myself, ‘How can I get it right?’ I had to go back to basics, talk to my children to understand them.” Warren said communication was key in all aspects.

Mbong Shu’s daughter, Stacey Fru, shared some expectations that teenagers have of their parents. She said that adolescence is a time of immense change and growth. During this phase, teenagers often develop understanding and space from their parents. Fru encouraged parents to rather focus on love instead of discipline.

Mbong Shu who is a mother of four and an author of five books said her new book is written to tackle the challenges of liberal parenting which mount as we groom children that are wired differently. She said the purpose of the book is not to give parents new knowledge but to remind them of what they already know.

“Parenting is an ongoing exercise. We are all given 24 hours and we all use time according to priorities. If you do not give your child your voice, other distractions out there will swallow your child,” said Mbong Shu.
She concluded by sharing the advice that no parent is better than the other and it is all about opportunities that different parents have access to.
