DP World Lions men’s cricket captain looks forward to his leadership role

DP World Lions cricket captain, Dominic Hendricks enjoys playing golf and fishing in his spare.

DP World Lions in Wanderers men’s cricket player Dominic Hendricks feels privileged and honoured to be the newly appointed captain of the Lions’ ship.

Hendricks said the leadership role came with massive responsibility. “I have the privilege to lead our players week in and week out with the support of the whole province on our shoulders. The individuals selected represent the diversity that this province has and with that comes massive responsibility to put in good performances every week.”

The 32-year-old began playing cricket in the streets of Port Elizabeth when he was about three years old and fondly remembers watching it on TV.

He added the biggest challenge he faced as a professional cricketer was the constant pressure.

“In the industry we are in, you are constantly having to put in performances. Unfortunately for us, we are only as good as our last performance on the park.”

Hendricks noted that he did not always have great tournament days but was glad to have an incredible support structure which included his wife, friends and family.

“At the end of the day, cricket is only a small portion of my life, so coming home I’ve got to leave whatever happened on the day behind and give my best to my family when I do get home. I also think it’s very important to have other interests outside of cricket.”

His other hobbies include golf and fishing which helps tremendously in getting away from the game.

The captain said his favourite tournaments included the recent one-day cup competition. “We won all three of them with the first one being shared due to inclement weather. The fact that we could be so competitive over three different seasons was incredible, and that we were tested as a group in many different ways and still came out on top is one of the highlights of my career.”
