NCPF shares precautions against burglaries and attempted break-ins

In a combined statement, the Norwood Community Police Forum urged residents to be more vigilant following a spike on burglaries and attempted break-ins.

The Norwood Community Police Forum (NCPF) Sector 4 urges vigilance amidst a surge in burglaries and attempted break-ins particularly targeting garage doors. NCPF chairperson Wayne Preston and NCPF Sector 4 chairperson Cebi Ngqinambi shared a combined statement regarding the issue on October 19.

The NCPF Sector 4 expressed deep concerns about the recent spike in burglaries and attempted break-ins within their community with a notable focus on criminals attempting to gain unauthorised access through garage doors. “As the holiday season approaches, criminals often become more active, seeking opportunities to exploit security vulnerabilities. The CPF is urging all residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their homes and neighbourhoods,” the statement read.

In light of these incidents, NCPF encourages the following precautions:

1. Secure your property; ensure all entry points, including garage doors, windows and doors, are properly secured with reliable locks and alarm systems.

2. Stay vigilant; be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious individuals or activities to the local authorities, immediately. Your vigilance can make a significant difference in deterring criminal activities.

3. Community patrols; organise neighbourhood patrols to keep a watchful eye on the community. Increased visibility can discourage potential criminals and enhance overall safety.

4. Collaborate with neighbours; foster a sense of community by working closely with your neighbours. Create a network where everyone looks out for one another and promptly communicates any security concerns. (WhatsApp groups, etc.).

5. Lighting and visibility; adequate outdoor lighting can deter criminals. Ensure well-lit pathways and consider motion-activated lights to illuminate dark areas around your property.

6. Garage door security; reinforce garage doors with sturdy locks and consider installing security systems specifically designed for garages. Regularly check the functionality of these security measures to insure they are in working order.

7. Community engagements; participate in community safety workshops and events organized by the CPF. Education and awareness are essential in strengthening the community’s resilience against criminal activities.

The CPF encourages residents to remain proactive and resilient during this time. The NCPF stated, “By working together and staying vigilant, we can create a safer environment for everyone. We appreciate the cooperation and support of the community in our collective efforts to maintain peace and security.”
