Meet the artist behind Phuza & Paint: A Highlands North resident with a vision for creative expression
A new wave of creativity is sweeping through Johannesburg, where art, connection, and self-expression come together unexpectedly and excitingly.
In the heart of Highlands North, Kat Johnstone’s vibrant spirit and creative vision come to life through her passion project, Phuza & Paint.
What started as a simple spark of inspiration has transformed into a dynamic business that blends art, joy, and social connection. Johnstone’s story is one of courage, authenticity, and the power of self-expression.
“I never expected this,” said Johnstone, reflecting on the journey that led her to found Phuza & Paint. It all began in 2022 when she was approached to facilitate a painting event at Rosebank Mall. “The reaction I got from people, seeing them light up when they created something beautiful, ignited a fire in me.”

The overwhelming joy participants expressed made her realise there was a real need for an experience that combined creativity with social fun. And so, Phuza & Paint was born, with Johnstone diving headfirst into the deep end.
Every Sip and Paint event she hosts is a bespoke experience, thoughtfully crafted for each group, whether it’s a team-building exercise, a corporate function, or a simple social gathering. Johnstone’s hands-on approach ensures every participant feels supported, from first-time painters to seasoned creatives. She’s there, offering guidance, encouragement, and plenty of laughter, creating an atmosphere of trust and expression. “It’s about making people feel safe to be themselves and to embrace their creativity without fear of judgment.”
Perhaps one of her most memorable events was a Coca-Cola corporate gathering, where executives from 15 countries worked together to create a giant mosaic of the company’s logo. Watching the individual canvases come together into a stunning collective piece was a magical moment that highlighted the power of collaboration and creativity. But for Johnstone, it’s the everyday moments that bring her the most joy, the transformation she sees in participants as they overcome their self-doubt and discover their inner artist.

Despite the rewarding nature of her work, balancing her passion with the demands of being a full-time student has been no easy feat. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences, majoring in psychology and counselling. Her academic pursuits have not only equipped her with valuable skills in working with people but have also influenced her approach to art and business. “Art therapy is something I’d love to explore and I see Phuza & Paint as a way to integrate that into my business.”
Her business, however, hasn’t come without challenges. The logistics of running an events company, from managing bookings to sourcing materials, sometimes feel overwhelming. But Johnstone takes it all in stride, drawing strength from the very thing that inspired her to start: the art itself. “Art is my therapy and it’s what keeps me going.”
Looking ahead, she dreams of expanding Phuza & Paint into a nationally recognised brand, reaching more people and offering diverse creative experiences. Johnstone also hopes to use her platform to create more accessible art spaces for underprivileged communities, believing that art should be a universal language, accessible to all.
Through her work, Johnstone has not only created a business but a movement – a celebration of art, self-expression, and the joy of discovery. As she continues to grow as both an artist and an entrepreneur, it’s clear that Phuza & Paint is more than just an event; it’s a space where people find their inner artist, share a few laughs, and leave feeling a little lighter, a little more connected, and a whole lot more creative.
