The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital remains resolute in responding to children’s health needs

The Children's Hospital fundraises for families through the Giving Heals initiative.

Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital CEO Dr Nonkululeko Boikhutso reflects on the hospital’s service in 2024 and its collaboration with partners in healthcare, government, academia, and the private sector.

Boikhutso said the past year saw successful partnerships with various stakeholders who, through answering the hospital’s call, have made great contributions to keeping Mandela’s vision for the hospital alive.

“Earlier this year, we celebrated Mandela’s legacy with our founder, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, by participating in a fun walk as part of the Children’s Day celebrations held on the former president’s birthday on July 18. We also ramped up our private service offering to expand our income streams, while remaining a hospital that responds to the needs of the public healthcare system.”

The CEO added their hybrid model positioned the institution as the only dedicated children’s hospital in Gauteng, serving both public and private patients, from across the country.

The CEO thanked the hospital staff who continually displayed a passion for their work and a great love for children, promoting an environment where children and their families remain at the centre of their services and receive the empathy they constantly need through difficult times.

“As we approach the festive season, we also continue to fundraise for those families in need through our Christmas campaign called Giving Heals, a plea to the public to support our patients and families during this period by donating money or other essential items to improve their stay at our hospital in December. We look forward to creating memories for families in the hospital this festive season,” said Boikhutso.

She concluded by encouraging the public to make a difference in children’s lives and continue the legacy of Mandela.
