End-of-year reflection: Footprints 4 Sam’s journey of kindness in 2024

Footprints 4 Sam reflects on a year filled with hope, compassion, and transformative change for children facing life-limiting illnesses.

As the festive season brightens our spirits, the Footprints 4 Sam Trust reflects on a year of extraordinary impact. Through six core initiatives, this remarkable organisation has transformed the lives of hundreds of underprivileged children with life-limiting illnesses, alongside their families and healthcare professionals.

The Super Sam Hero Bucket Initiative delivered essential food, toiletries, and toys to vulnerable families, spreading warmth and relief. Meanwhile, the Super Sam Hero Vehicle Initiative ensured over 6 300 children reached medical appointments safely, thanks to dedicated drivers who went the extra mile.

At Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital, the paediatric outpatient ward received a much-needed makeover, creating a vibrant, uplifting space. Plans are underway to rejuvenate the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and associated wards, promising even more transformation.

Advocacy took centre stage as co-founders Fred and Melissa Platt addressed Wits University medical students, championing ‘The Samuel Generation of Healthcare’, a vision of empathy-driven care. Sister Jane Booth’s Trachease Training Initiative empowered staff with life-saving skills and critical equipment at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

The year’s highlights included Sweat 4 Sam’s fundraising triumphs, from marathons to an inaugural ladies padel charity morning, all driving the trust’s mission forward. New ventures like the Angels 4 Sam programme brought comfort and hope to paediatric wards through volunteers offering stories, cuddles, and DIY hospital makeovers.

Melissa nominated Prof Ashraf Coovadia as 2024’s hero for his transformative leadership in paediatric healthcare. His dedication to children’s well-being exemplifies the heart of Footprints 4 Sam.

With gratitude to its donors, the trust looks to 2025 with hope, determined to leave even greater footprints of compassion across South Africa.
