Displaced man found dead at Zoo Lake, SAPS investigating

An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the cause of the death of a displaced man whose body was found near Zoo Lake.

A man was found dead at Zoo Lake on January 9, raising concerns about the plight of Johannesburg’s displaced communities.

The body was discovered after a fellow displaced person approached Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) security guard Kenneth Babe at around 13:50, reporting an unresponsive individual. The deceased, identified as Mdala Nkomo, in his late 40s or early 50s, was located near the park.

Babe immediately contacted the Parkview Police, who arrived at 14:13. Paramedics later confirmed that Nkomo had passed away. An inquest docket has been opened, though no foul play is suspected.

Zoo Lake, a cherished recreational spot for locals, has also become a temporary refuge for many displaced individuals. JCPZ has urged those living in the park to seek formal shelter to avoid the risks of harsh weather conditions and unsafe environments.

While investigations continue, Nkomo’s death highlights the urgent need for long-term solutions to homelessness and support for Johannesburg’s most vulnerable residents.
